The SS22
The SpaceSailer 22 (SS22) is a 22 foot (6.7m) fibreglass construction yacht designed in 1973 by West Australian naval architect, Kim Swarbrick. It is the most popular member of a stable of "SpaceSailer" designs which also include 18, 20, 24 & 27 foot versions. Most SS22’s were built in the period 1975 to 1990, and have proved to be very durable.
The SS22 is a masthead rigged yacht and was designed for high performance racing for both inshore and limited offshore (Cat. 6) events, whilst also providing simple yet spacious accommodation for cruising at a very reasonable cost. Whilst most SS22’s are a fixed keel configuration, a number of trailable swing keel models have also been built. There are now over fifty SS22s in use in WA, with the majority based at South of Perth Yacht Club and Claremont Yacht Club, where competitive class racing is conducted.
The SS22 can be easily sailed by a crew of two when cruising, making it an ideal "husband and wife" entry level keel boat. For competitive racing, a crew of four adults is required for optimum performance with a sail wardrobe of a fully battened mainsail, up to three headsails and up to two spinnakers.
For those interested in cruising, most yachts conform to a standard production layout which incorporates moulded fibreglass interior furniture comprising 4 berths [including 2 spacious quarter berths], sink / icebox module, and stove / cupboard module. There is room in the bow for a chemical toilet, and there is good storage under the berths, as well as a large transom storage locker accessed through the rear cockpit seat. A "pop-top" cabin roof provides 6 foot headroom over the main cabin area.
The SpaceSailer 22 Association of WA (Inc) draws its membership from owners of SS22’s throughout the state. The Association constitution contains class rules which ensure uniformity of hull, sails, rig and equipment for racing purposes. The Association conducts a series of State Championship races on the Swan River over each summer sailing season.
As a SS22 owner, membership of a yacht club provides increased opportunities for use and enjoyment of your investment; racing, cruising-in-company, twilight sailing, maintenance facilities, training and social activities are all available in a friendly club environment which promotes a sense of camaraderie within the class.
